Treating Your Pneumonia

Severe chest congestion, wheezing and a deep rumbling cough are all signs that you or someone you love could be dealing with pneumonia. With pneumonia season right around the corner, our Greenville, TX, pulmonologist Dr. Mohan Philip wants people to stay healthy and well during these months. Of course, if you or a loved one does catch pneumonia, here’s how to treat it.

What type of pneumonia do you have?

While viral pneumonia is often the most common, a viral infection isn’t always to blame. Sometimes patients may develop bacterial or fungal pneumonia, so It’s important not to ignore your symptoms. Our Greenville, TX, pulmonologist can help you feel better soon. Common symptoms associated with pneumonia include,

  • Persistent and productive cough
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue

I have viral pneumonia. How is it treated?

Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics; however, they will respond to antiviral medications. Along with this medication, rest and home care can help you manage symptoms until you start to feel better. These simple measures include,

  • Staying hydrated
  • Resting as much as possible
  • Taking over-the-counter pain relievers for fever or cough suppressants (talk with our doctor before taking any medication for your pneumonia)

I have bacterial pneumonia. How is it treated?

Bacterial forms of pneumonia will respond best to antibiotics, which our pulmonologist will need to prescribe to you. Along with antibiotics, you will want to practice the same at-home care that you would with viral or other forms of pneumonia. It is important that you rest as much as possible.

I have fungal pneumonia. How is it treated?

While rarer than other forms of pneumonia, fungal infections can also lead to this respiratory condition. If so, our doctor will prescribe an antifungal oral medication to help you get rid of your fungal infection.

If a patient is dealing with more severe symptoms such as trouble breathing or fluid in the lungs, they may need to be hospitalized in order to receive proper fluids and medications via an IV, or oxygen. Seniors and those with preexisting health problems are more likely to require hospitalization for pneumonia.
